In 1977, Mikis Theodorakis composed Greek Dances , a ballet Suite for solo bouzouki & orchestra, which he dedicated to Maurice Bejart in 1980. These twelve songs by Mikis Theodorakis became the basis for the Danses Grecques ballet of Maurice Bejart. According to Maurice Bejart, in the Greek Dances , Mikis Theodorakis has succeeded in giving us a vision of Greek music that is both traditional and popular, in the process of creating a score that has the rigor and force of Johan Sebastian Bach.
These exceptional orchestral musical pieces were recorded during Mikis Theodorakis and his orchestra's international tour of 1978, with Lakis Karnezis as the soloist. Through different choreographic forms, Greek Dances became a brilliant ballet that balances between the rigour of a Bach's serenade and the eastern warmth of the Mediterranean.
