[ Myrintha's lovers ] The Lovers of Myrintha is a deeply erotic story that takes place in the fifties, during the hazy years of the Greek post Civil War. Dimitris Melissinos, a thirty-five year old actor from the National Theatre, and Iliana, a beautiful, frail and thin woman around twenty-six, meet in a train from Vienna to Athens. The monotonous journey, the loneliness of travelling so many hours and the Austrian spring outside bring the two young people together, and without realising it they fall in love… violently, silently and yet inexplicably so. The woman tries hard to resist this rash and wild feeling, but she holds mysterious bonds elsewhere that do not allow her to give in freely –as she would like to– and with all her heart to this sudden passion. Luck, however, seems to be on Dimitris’s side; he manages to go and stay in a small Austrian village where a now powerless Iliana finally gives in to him. It will be too late though by the time she realises what her weakness has allowed for. She runs, panic-stricken, hoping to disappear, leaving behind a letter for Dimitris in which she asks him not to look for her. He finds it, reads it. He goes crazy; how could he accept his lover’s absence, how could he live without her? He is ready to move heaven and earth, and turn the whole world upside down only to find her. |
