The history of harbours begins with the history of boats and ships, and, like it, is lost in the mist of the centuries. When the primitive boatman came back to land from his first voyage, he would be looking for a quiet, safe anchorage close to the shore where his little craft would be protected from the currents of the river or the storms of the sea. When he found such a place, it might occur to him that it would be more convenient to build his hut nearby so as to be close to his boat, keeping an eye on it and well-placed to set off out to sea again in the morning...
