«Homer’s Epics» offers young learners a chance to realise the continuity of the Greek language and its development through centuries, to excite their interest for the learning of ancient Greek, to get accustomed to new ways of presentation of knowledge and, finally, to build their learning of the ancient Greek language upon their knowledge of modern Greek. The introduction of a cultural dimension in the learning of ancient Greek and the emphasis upon the teaching of ancient Greek combined with parallel teaching of other school subjects are two of the most important features of the software.
The software covers extracts from the Iliad as well as the Odyssey. The young learner can find an animation of the Ulyses trip, a depiction of the Achaeans wall outside Troy, texts and photographs of the archaeological sites of Mycenae and Troy. Further more a number of mythological information, maps, vase paintings with scenes from Ulyses’ adventures and the Troian War are included, together with a virtual museum with mycenaean findings from all over Greece.
The ancient Greek texts are fully annotated and are accompanied by an original translation in modern Greek. The software allows for the comparison of the two texts through the use of the technique of parallel speaking texts developed by ILSP. Language remarks follow every text as well as exercises for consolidation of the language material.
The software « Homer’s Epics» can be used for self-teaching at home as well as for guided teaching in lower secondary education.
